  • William Hartley Jones, 80, died peacefully in his sleep at Westminster Canterbury retirement center in Winchester, Virginia, in the early hours of May 2, 2018, following a short illness. Funeral services are scheduled for May 11, at 11:00 a.m., at Christ Episcopal Church, Winchester. Bill was born in Winona, Mississippi, on February 23, 1938, to the Rev. Winfred Pipes Jones and Eugenia Lewis Brookfield Jones. The family moved several times in his childhood but he always considered Palatka, Florida, to be where he grew up. Bill graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1960 and married Katharine Davis Mounger (Kay) in 1961. He spent most his adult life in Middle Tennessee, where he worked for the Social Administration. He also farmed and hosted a bed and breakfast until he and Kay moved to Winchester in 2010. He was a devout and active member of the Episcopal Church throughout his life, most recently of Christ Church in Winchester. He was a regular volunteer there, as well as at the Virginia State Arboretum at Blandy Farm. He loved to travel and at one point estimated he had visited 30 different countries. He is survived by Kay, his wife of 57 years; two children, Katharine Eugenia (Kathy) Jones and William Davis (Davis) Jones; a daughter-in-law, Rosario (Charo) de la Rosa Jones; and a granddaughter, Julia Eugenia Jones.   • Leslie Anvick Carper, 90, of Stephens City, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in Winchester Medical Center. Mr. Carper was born May 17, 1922 in Winchester; the son of Philip Leslie Carper and Carrie Virginia Mason Carper. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He retired as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a former member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church and a member of Stephens City United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion, a lifetime member of the Izaak Walton League, the last living founding member of the Mountain Falls Hunt Club, the National Association of Letter Carriers and volunteered for over 30 years with the American Red Cross. He married Dorothy Fahnestock on September 26, 1948 in Winchester. Along with his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Carper Austin Cregger of Vinton, VA and Sarah Carper Johnson of Middletown, VA; his grandchildren, Gwynne Austin Warren, Claire Austin, Harrison Austin and Charles E. Johnson; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Anvick Carper. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at The Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Butcher and Rev. Waverly Reames officiating. Burial will be private. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Johnson, Harrison Austin, Dana Starliper, Toby Boyce, Don Cregger, Max Hausenfluck and Landon Jacobsen. The family will receive friends on Sunday...
