Lions Club sets pancake sale Flat River Lions will hold a pancake sale on Saturday, May 13, the club decided Wednesday during a meeting at the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Leadington. The club will sell pancakes to the public in the St. Francois County Nutritional Program in Flat River from 6 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Several musical groups have offered to entertain the diners. The price will be announced later. Lions heard a speech on birds by the Rev. William Magill.
He said this area is teeming with countless interesting species. On Jan. 1 of this year, Magill said, he observed numerous types in his back yard, including a goldfinch, a starling, a blue jay, a cardinal, a titmouse and a purple finch. The help birds have given mankind is often forgotten, the speaker said. Even a bird such as the starling, which has a bad reputation, has a good side, Magill said, since it preys upon the Japanese beetle.
One of the largest of all woodpeckers, the speaker added, the pileated woodpecker, is found in this area. He also discussed the sapsucker woodpecker, which pecks a serious of holes in a straight line in trees to drink their sap.
